Steel Mesh Slings
Steel Mesh Slings — also known as wire mesh or metal mesh slings — combine the durability of metal construction with the flexibility and wide bearing surface of a flat sling. Fabricated from interlocking steel wire spirals, mesh slings grip and conform to the load while providing excellent resistance to abrasion, cutting, and elevated temperatures.
A key advantage of steel mesh slings is that they can be repaired and recertified. Unlike synthetic slings or wire rope slings where damage often means replacement, a qualified person can repair a steel mesh sling body and return it to service — making them a cost-effective long-term investment in environments that are hard on equipment.
The wide, flat bearing surface distributes load pressure and provides secure grip, reducing the risk of load slippage during lifting. This makes mesh slings well suited for handling hot, rough, or irregularly shaped loads that would quickly damage synthetic slings.
Amick supplies steel mesh slings and provides repair services from our Pittsburgh facility.
Type
Metal mesh (wire mesh) slings. Interlocking steel wire spiral construction with metal end fittings.
Applications
Foundry operations, steel mills, metalworking, forging, heat treating, and any application involving hot, abrasive, or rough-surfaced loads. Well suited for environments where synthetic slings would be damaged by heat or cut by sharp or abrasive surfaces. Common in steel processing, scrap handling, and heavy manufacturing.
Exceptions
Per ASME B30.9, consult the sling manufacturer when mesh slings are used at temperatures above 550°F (288°C) or below -20°F (-29°C). Any single broken wire in the mesh body is cause for removal from service. Inspect end fittings for deformation, cracks, and wear — a 15% reduction in the cross-sectional area at any point around the hook opening requires removal from service. Periodic documented inspections are required at least annually per ASME B30.9.
