Grommet Slings
Grommet Slings are endless wire rope slings formed into a continuous loop — with no splices, fittings, or terminations in the load path. This seamless construction provides maximum strength efficiency because the load is distributed across the full circumference of the grommet, with no strength reduction from a splice or pressed fitting.
Amick fabricates two types of grommets: Strand Laid Grommets, made from a single strand of wire rope wound into a loop, and Rope Laid Grommets, made from a full wire rope wound into a loop. The choice between strand laid and rope laid depends on the required capacity, flexibility, and the specific application.
Grommets are primarily used in basket hitch configurations for specialized lifting applications where the load shape, weight, or rigging geometry demands the unique properties of an endless wire rope loop. Their smooth, continuous body provides consistent contact with the load and eliminates the potential weak point of a sling termination.
All Amick grommet slings are fabricated at our Pittsburgh facility.
Type
Strand Laid and Rope Laid endless wire rope grommets.
Applications
Specialized heavy lifting, including turning rolls, large vessel handling, heavy equipment setting, and applications requiring basket hitches with maximum strength efficiency. Used in construction, shipbuilding, energy, and heavy industrial operations.
Exceptions
Inspect grommets for broken wires, corrosion, kinking, flattening, and wear per ASME B30.9 wire rope sling criteria. Because grommets are endless, wear is distributed — but concentrated loading at bearing points should be monitored. Grommets are not suitable for choker hitches unless specifically designed for that application.
